One of the
transformers used in the distribution process of power within the hydro plant
was being maintained today. The transformer oil present in the transformer was
seen to have deteriorated as a results of many factors including heat as a
result of it being generated since the transformer is working, moisture due to
evaporation from heat generated which is accumulated at the conservation tank, debris
settling down at the bottom of the oil, the cellulose serving as insulation for
the transformer. The transformer worked on is as shown below with its
specifications;
Due to this deterioration, the oil present in the
transformer needed reconditioning. This was done using an oil purifier. The NITTO
Oil Machinery Co. Ltd oil purifier was used for this in this instance. The
internal circuitry of this system is as shown below;
The filters
present are used to filter out debris present in the oil. The degasification
chamber is to remove any gas which is detrimental to the transformer oil. The
vapour trap is to trap any vapour existent within the transformer oil.

deteriorated transformer oil:
The
reconditioning is done when all the oil present in the transformer has gone
through the whole process as shown in the internal circuitry above. For massive
systems such as the transformer here, the dielectric of the oil is expected to
measure at 50KV. Should it fall below this even after passing through the
purifier, it should be re-purified until it gets to 50KV at minimum.
After
reconditioning, the transformer oil was being topped up with new oil. Below are
figures of Engineers and Technicians physically filling the transformer up with
transformer oil.
Note: 1ppm of moisture in the
transformer isn’t good enough and would require purification
